In this article, Laura Mathieu, Head of Digital Sustainability at Fujitsu Luxembourg, shares Fujitsu's vision for digital sustainability and explains how this vision is integrated into the company's overall ESG strategy. With the digital sector currently accounting for almost 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, Fujitsu is committed to using technology responsibly to support initiatives that improve everyday life and conserve the planet's resources. Find out more about Fujitsu's concrete initiatives to promote sustainable development both locally and internationally, and the essential role of technology in the company's sustainability approach.

-> What is Fujitsu's vision for digital sustainability and how is this reflected in its global ESG strategy?

Although digital technology currently accounts for almost 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, we believe that digital technology can support many initiatives aimed at improving people's daily lives and conserving the planet's resources.

The Fujitsu Group has always been strongly committed to sustainable issues and has further strengthened its commitment by creating the Fujitsu Uvance brand, which aims to support our customers in their sustainable transformation.

To achieve this, Fujitsu relies not only on its technological expertise, but also on a robust methodology. By combining the strengths of AI, hyper-automation, cybersecurity, data management, cloud, etc. on the one hand, and a methodology based on several phases depending on the customer's digital maturity on the other. The aim is really to be able to match business needs and user expectations, while taking advantage of the best new technologies.

To ensure that we create sustainable digital solutions, we integrate these considerations at every stage: at the project definition stage, by incorporating them into the objectives; at the design stage, by ensuring that we incorporate all the best practices; and at the implementation stage, by optimising the entire value chain.

-> Can you tell us about the concrete initiatives that Fujitsu has taken to promote sustainable development, both locally in Luxembourg and as part of the Group's global strategy?

I think that in order to be able to legitimately talk to our customers about sustainability, it's important that we ourselves have a very clear understanding of the issues involved and that we develop solutions both internally within Fujitsu and with our customers.

The first step is to raise awareness and educate our employees. Everyone who joins the Fujitsu Group receives annual training on these issues, and all communications are linked in one way or another to our sustainability values.

Internationally, the Fujitsu Group organises Sustainability Week, a major initiative to raise awareness and promote environmentally responsible practices within the company. This dedicated week enabled Fujitsu employees to participate in events and workshops focused on sustainability, strengthening collective environmental awareness.

At Fujitsu Luxembourg, we wanted to go one step further and involve our employees in this digital transformation adventure. This year, we launched a working group on ESG issues: People, Planet, Prosperity. This initiative is open to everyone in the company. The aim is to ensure that everyone feels involved, but also that they can take action in society to make a difference in their day-to-day professional lives. We're tackling everything from inclusivity and mobility to managing our greenhouse gases.

Thanks to these various workshops, we have defined our local strategy and selected 8 of the UN SDGs. It was important for us to define concrete goals and a clear strategy that will guide all our decisions in the coming years.

On the group side, thanks to the strength of our 125,000 employees around the world, the strategy focuses on all 17 of the UN SDGs and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and carbon neutrality across the entire value chain by 2040.

-> What role does technology play in Fujitsu's approach to sustainability and how does the company integrate technological innovation to achieve its ESG goals?

Technology plays an essential role in Fujitsu's approach to sustainability, and at the same time the company is faced with the delicate challenge of balancing technological progress with environmental protection. Fujitsu recognises that the integration of digital tools, while facilitating dematerialisation, has an environmental impact, particularly with the growing impact of artificial intelligence and the challenges associated with cloud computing. To achieve its ESG goals, the company advocates a thoughtful approach to the cloud, encouraging the optimal sharing of resources and the migration to more energy-efficient architectures, such as microservices.

Fujitsu also promotes energy and technology sobriety by adopting responsible data management practices, reducing the need for IT resources and raising awareness of best practices among users. By focusing on responsible digitalisation, Fujitsu is committed to using technology as a means to address societal and environmental challenges.
